Choose a lab first

Need sequencing first? Start with a lab that gives you raw files.

If this is your first test, the key decision is not how polished the bundled report looks. It is whether you will actually be able to keep the raw files afterwards.

Fern Gene does not run sequencing. We handle what happens after you receive the files.

Sequence first, then come back to Fern Gene

The lab hands the data to you. Fern Gene makes that data stay useful later.

These are not competing layers. The lab handles sequencing and delivery. Fern Gene handles what keeps happening after import.

  • First make sure the lab delivers standard raw files
  • Then bring those files back to Fern Gene
  • Long-term value comes from ongoing interpretation, not a one-time bundled report

Check these four things first

  • You can download and keep standard raw files
  • Formats like VCF, gVCF, or CRAM are available for downstream use
  • The experience is not limited to a one-time web report
  • Ownership, download access, and turnaround are explained clearly

Lab types worth checking first

If you do not already have a lab in mind, start by screening for these three patterns instead of following the loudest marketing page.

30x whole-genome providers with downloadable raw files

This is the cleanest starting point for people who want one sequencing result to stay useful over time.

  • Look for downloadable VCF, gVCF, or CRAM files
  • Look for a clear raw-file ownership policy
  • Look for the option to re-download later

Providers with clearer Asia-region delivery

If you are ordering in Asia, look beyond the test itself and make sure account access and export steps are clearly documented.

  • Check whether your region is really supported
  • Check whether file download is explicit and stable
  • Check whether support can answer raw-file questions

Providers that require a claim code or manual retrieval later

These can still work, but you should confirm how the files actually come back before you buy.

  • Ask how retrieval works
  • Ask whether download access expires
  • Ask whether you can download again later

How to come back to Fern Gene later

  1. 1Keep the raw files the lab gives you
  2. 2Return to Fern Gene and choose import
  3. 3Build your encrypted local profile and start ongoing interpretation
